Spring Training Begins for the Houston Astros

by Kori Ellis on February 15th, 2008

On Valentine’s Day, there was more than love in the air in Kissimmee, Florida. There were also baseballs flying through the air as the Houston Astros gathered to begin spring training.

Pitchers and catchers are the first players to report to spring training, with position players joining the action in the beginning of next week. The Astros had 26 pitchers and six catchers on hand when spring training officially began. The only pitcher not on hand was Jose Valverde, who was attending his salary arbitration hearing.

Astros manager Cecil Cooper thought that the first day of spring training was a success.

Said Cooper to the Houston Chronicle: “Everything ran smoothly, and the staff did a good job. I made sure I moved around and watched the staff to see what’s taking place, and everything went well. We’re happy today.”

For the players, this part of spring training is as much about meeting their teammates as it is impressing the coaches.

“Ultimately in spring,” said relief pitcher Geoff Geary, “we’re trying to build a team and build a family.”

However, spring training wouldn’t be complete without players already wishing it were over.

“Forty-five more days,” said pitcher Chris Sampson, referencing the beginning of the baseball season.
