Q & A: Ask Hunter
Hello everyone -
Hunter is eager to field questions from Astros fans.
So if you have a question for Hunter, leave it here in the comments of this post and Hunter will do his best to answer it soon.
Do you want to know about his training regimen? His teammates? What it’s like to be a big leaguer? What he eats for dinner?
Do you want to improve your own hitting? Know about Hunter as a kid?
Whatever you want to know about Hunter or the Houston Astros, just ask Hunter here and he’ll do his best to answer your questions. He hopes to make this a very interactive community of Astros fans as the season gets underway.
People have been emailing about how often Hunter writes here on Inside the Ballpark …
He writes weekly (normally on Fridays). Then throughout the week, I fill in the blog with Astros news and other information.
Oh and remember … Hunter is looking for nickname suggestions for Erstad!
Thanks,
Kori Ellis

Hey Hunter!
I’ve always wondered how a game day goes. Do you take a nap earlier in the day? Do you practice on that day? What do you eat before a game? It’s so physical so I’d imagine that you’d want to eat something substantial but I guess you wouldn’t want to eat anything too heavy either.
Thanks!!!

Hi Hunter,
I read that you drove from Arlington all the way to Kissimmee for spring training. Why did you drive there? Is that a common practice?
Thanks and great job so far on your blog!

Hunter, with this being the digital age and all how much of any video do you watch? Whether it be break downs of your at bats, or certain pitchers and/or match ups?

Hunter,
Before a game are there preparations that you take to get to know the opposing pitcher? Do you read scouting reports on how he normally pitches to batters, review records of how he has pitched to you previously, or is there another approach you use to prepare for the confrontation? Is your approach similar to other Astros players or do they each have their own approach?

Hey Hunter, how do you feel about the Astros going into the new season? Obviously our lineup is one of the best in the N.L. on paper (i personally think you should bat 3rd), and as opposed to many, i actually think our rotation will do just fine, along with having a strong bullpen and bench (probably the most overlooked factors on a baseball team), i can see the Astros at the top of our division.
By the way, how long was the drive from Arlington to Kissimmee? Me and some of my friends plan on driving from Houston out there in March, just want to gauge how long im gonna be behind the wheel.

Hunter, I love the “old school” style of play and really appreciate the effort you give on every play. I can’t wait to see you in person this year at the Yankees game. You should call Erstad “Salty E” since he’s been around awhile and won a WS.
Can I have an autographed bat? lol Actually, can I?

Hey Hunter,
I am totally excited about this years roster. I have been counting down the days since our last game last year. As always I am excited to get to watch you play. You always seem to just love baseball. I will be at every game I can get tickets for and will be listening/watching the others. I did have a question though, where do you live during the season? and What do you do during the off season… except fish of course!

Hunter, if you were a fantasy baseball player, what round would you take yourself in?
Good luck this season!

Hunter,
Are you looking forward to playing in the hyped up Red Sox and Yankee series in June? The front office has a raffle for tickets because of the high demand. My father lives in Boston, and I have to say Fenway is just awesome. I sure whenever the Stros travel there you’ll enjoy it. I am both a Red Sox and Astros fan, and I guess it fits as they’re from the National League and American League. It works out..I will be attending a game or two of the sox series as a sox fan, but don’t worry your still a great player and the astros are going to be good this year with a much improved lineup nothing against the hometown boys. Thanks.

Hello Hunter.
Do you play fantasy baseball? I have wondered that as fantasy sports have become huge now a days. I am in a Keeper Baseball League which I got into last year (and won :)). I actually tried drafting you in my minor league draft but someone selected you before my selection. :(

Yo, My brothers and I are all tall, lanky, quick, athletic guys with fast reflexes. But, whenever we go to eat or are having a snack one of us if not all 3 always end up knocking over a drink, or getting mustard on our shorts/shirt or getting some kind of stain on our pants. Do you have this problem, do you just armor up with napkins, or am I comlletly wrong in assuming you arnt the neatest eater in the world? I happen to use tons of napkins when i eat, but I am a drippy food/stain magnet. what up?

I posted this on another message board that’s looking for the answer, too.
Erst Wind & Fire!
Although I just realized it also works when Erstad, Bourn (speedy=wind), and you (fire) are all in the outfield together…
But as for my question, it somewhat relates to your projected position in the order and a couple of things I’ve seen you post and stuff going on around the league. I’ve seen many projections circling around that suggest and argue about the merits of you in a particular spot (leadoff vs. #2 vs. #3 etc.), and I’m not sure what weight to give to any of them. I hear Dusty Baker somewhat dismiss .OBP on one end, and then Tony LaRussa using the pitcher to hit eighth. Which makes me wonder how much interest do you have in those kinds of projections/stats, especially as being a newcomer?
Or I guess, take it one step further, where do you fall on the saber/stathead vs. traditionalist/seen it with my own eyes debate? Do you use stats at all to help any part of your game?

My sister told me she thinks you played with my nephew, on an elite team in high school. His name
is Andy Jamison. Andy graduated from Western Hills high school. I watched you last year, and you are a real JOY to watch! I llok forward to seeing your name on the Astros roster for a LONG time!! Becky Bearden
