Miguel Tejada Stars in Caribbean Series

by Kori Ellis on February 3rd, 2008

On Saturday, Miguel Tejada hit two homeruns for the Dominican Republic to become the all-time leading homerun hitter in Caribbean Series history. Tejada, who hit homeruns number 12 and number 13, was acquired from the Baltimore Orioles this offseason and will play shortstop this season for the Houston Astros.

The Caribbean Series is a baseball tournament that lasts approximately six days. Each team plays each other and the team with the most wins at the end of the tournament is named champion.

Tejada plays for the Dominican Republic team called Cibao Eagles. On Saturday, Tejada’s two homeruns powered the Cibao Eagles to a 13-6 victory over Mexico’s Obregon Yaquis.

The Dominican Republic has been the most successful country in the Caribbean Series, which dates all the way back to 1946. The Dominican Republic has had 16 championship teams, with the team called Tigres del Licey winning it nine times.

Tejada will be in action again on Sunday as the Cibao Eagles take on a team from Venezuela.
