Berkman is clutch both on and off the field

Since 2001, Houston Astros first baseman Lance Berkman has been leading a charity called “Berkman’s Bunch.” It’s a chance for 50 kids to meet Berkman before each Saturday home game. Berkman takes time out of his normal routine on Saturday’s to sign autographs, answer questions and hand out other gifts to underprivileged youth in the Houston area.
Partnered with Methodist Health, Berkman’s charity has been going strong for eight seasons. The kids for each Saturday home game are chosen by Berkman and Methodist. The chosen kids are members of various organizations, including Boys & Girls Country, TOMAGWA, Northwest Assistance Ministries, Baytown Family YMCA and Hope for Youth.
If Berkman doesn’t feel good enough about what he’s doing with Berkman’s Bunch, he should after looking at his contract. The native Texan not only gives back through his charity, but he also gives back through his contract by offering up $100,000 each season to a club charity.
Berkman’s play on the field, combined with his efforts in the community has made him a local hero for many Astros fans.

[…] Inside The Ballpark: Not only is Lance Berkman going to be a Hall of Famer, but he is also apparently a REALLY nice guy. $100 grand of his salary every year gets donated to a club charity AND he runs his own called ‘Berkman’s Bunch.’ Maybe some of his goodness will offset Shawn Chacon’s badness.
